SRM360 Primer

SRM & Brazil

Brazil is experiencing the worsening impacts of climate change and there is growing interest in sunlight reflection methods (SRM). This primer introduces SRM and explores what it could mean for Brazil.

As global temperatures approach 1.5°C of warming, Brazil is already experiencing the worsening impacts of climate change, including the degradation of the Amazon and reduced agricultural productivity. With risks mounting, there is growing interest in a set of ideas to cool the planet. What are these ideas, and what could they mean for Brazil?

SRM360 worked in collaboration with the Climate and Society Institute (iCS) to co-create a primer explaining how SRM technologies could influence Brazil’s climate risks, including impacts on heat, water, agriculture, and the Amazon, while highlighting the potential benefits, uncertainties, and governance considerations.

The primer informed a national seminar hosted by the Brazilian Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI) and supported by iCS on 24 September 2025 – marking the first time this topic has been addressed at the highest level of government. The event brought together national and international experts – including researchers, policymakers, and civil society leaders – with 62 in-person attendees and over 300 online participants across Portuguese, English, and Spanish streams.

The material co-produced by SRM360 and iCS is already being cited by researchers and government officials in presentations. Following the seminar, MCTI announced plans to consolidate a scientific advisory committee on SRM – a critical next step for engaging other areas of government.

A recording of the seminar is available here.
