Introduction to Climate Reflections

The SRM360 Podcast

: :

Climate Reflections: The SRM360 podcast explores the science, ethics, and current understanding of Sunlight Reflection Methods (SRM), also known as solar radiation modification, or solar geoengineering. SRM is a set of methods being researched to reflect some sunlight back to space in order to cool the planet. This podcast will present the views of a wide range of experts working in this field and explore what is known, what is not known, and the issues SRM raises.

Climate Reflections will have two episodes a month. One will be the monthly News Roundup, where you’ll hear about all the SRM news over the last month, and the other will be the monthly themed podcast, where guests will join host Pete Irvine to explore a wide range of SRM related topics.

Welcome to Climate Reflections: The SRM360 podcast.

You may have heard of solar geoengineering or solar radiation modification. These terms describe a set of ideas to reflect a bit of sunlight back to space to help counteract global warming. This may sound like science fiction, but it’s an idea that scientists really are studying, and I’m one of them.

My name is Pete Irvine and I’ll be your host for this podcast. I’ve been studying sunlight reflections methods also known as solar radiation modification or SRM since 2009. I’m now a research assistant professor at the University of Chicago and the Editorial Director for SRM360.

Climate Reflections is a production of SRM360, a non-profit knowledge hub supporting an informed, evidence-based discussion of sunlight reflection methods.

We started SRM360 because there is a lack of understanding about the risks, costs, and potential benefits of SRM among people working in policy, media, and the wider climate community. We worry that this lack of understanding could lead to uninformed decisions with harmful outcomes. SRM360 works with experts and advisors from around the world to distill what is known about SRM and present it in an accessible way on our website at SRM360.org.

This podcast will be an important part of our work, where we’ll present the views of a wide range of experts on developments in this field and explore the issues it raises. We’ll have two episodes a month. One will be our monthly News Roundup, where you’ll hear about all the SRM news over the last month, and the other will be our monthly themed podcast, where we’ll explore a wide range of SRM related topics.

Our first episodes are available now wherever you get your podcasts.
