Elizabeth Thompson

Her Excellency The Most Honourable H. Elizabeth Thompson is Barbados’ Ambassador for Climate Change, Small Island Developing States and Law of the Sea. She was appointed as Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley’s Sherpa to the CVF-V20. She also serves as the Deputy President of the Senate of Barbados.

Ambassador Thompson served as a Minister of Government from 1994-2008, over that period, she at various times held portfolios of Health, Physical Development and Planning, Housing and Lands, Energy, and Environment. In these portfolios she introduced numerous groundbreaking social and developmental policies to Barbados.

Liz Thompson has also held a number of roles in the United Nations, including Assistant Secretary General and Executive Coordinator for the Rio+20 Conference on Sustainable Development, Advisor to the Secretary General and to the President of the General Assembly. In 2018, she was appointed as the Permanent Representative of Barbados to the UN.

Ambassador Thompson is an attorney-at-law, and holds and LLB, LLM, MBA and is the author of numerous papers on development issues and three books. In 2008, she was awarded the UN’s prestigious ‘Champion of the Earth Award’ and in 2024, she was given Barbados’ highest honour, ‘The Order of Freedom of Barbados.’ She has been tracking issues on geoengineering and likely implications, particularly for the Caribbean for over a decade.
